Bill’s Bio

Bill was born in Georgia in 1929 and grew up in Anderson, South Carolina with her parents and four siblings. Bill has five children, two that were born in South Carolina and three born in California where she and her husband, Bill Hawkins, moved to in the late 1950’s.

Bill went to cosmetology school as a young woman in South Carolina, but retired as a data processing supervisor at the age of 65 in California. But I think her favorite career was being a mom and watching over her kids.

Martha “Bill”

Martha got the nickname “Bill” as a child growing up in South Carolina. She and her siblings were driven to school by their neighbor in his pony cart. The pony’s name was Bill. To get moving, the neighbor would say “get up, Bill” to the pony, and Martha would spritely pop up from her seat and stand in the cart. She was told to sit down, but each time he would say “get up, Bill,” Martha would stand up in the cart. So from then on, her family and friends knew her as “Bill.”
