Our Daddy

Our father, Bill Hawkins, was born in South Carolina in 1929 and passed away July of 2009 in South Carolina. His given name was William Trenton Hawkins, and our mom called him by his middle name, Trenton (although for years I thought it was “Trunnon” the way she pronounced it.) Dad served in the navy from 1946 until 1948. Daddy was married to our mom for about 23 years. He never graduated from high school, but he ran or managed several businesses (one of which was making curtains and other items), loved gardening, cooking, music, telling stories, occasionally gambling and a good laugh. He loved animals, too, especially cats. He was a hard worker and loved his kids. We miss you, Daddy.

After moving from South Carolina to California, one of the many things mom and dad did to support us was to manage apartments and to sew leather purses. After a hard day of working one and often two jobs, dad would come home and together with mom they’d begin the difficult task of sewing leather, draw string purses. Mom often worked during this time too as a telephone operator. With only a nineth grade education, dad became fairly successful. After moving from Los Angeles to Orange County dad continued to work two jobs and mom would often dress us up, drive us to one of the places he worked to bring him a hot dinner she had wrapped in foil. This was often the only way we saw him, as he dedicated most of his time to supporting his growing family.
